Common Sights and Sounds in Honduras: The Orange Peeler

I don't know who invented this orange peeler or when, but these are used everywhere in Honduras. Most commonly, you can find these at every mercado. I do know that they are manufactured in China.

it's an apple peeler, but not sure why they bother with oranges

Great photos. I like the ridges that it leaves on the oranges.

I've never seen anyone peel an apple with it. I usually eat the peel on apples, peeling them allows them to brown quickly. Just me though...

Thanks LG!!!

Please find out why they do this! It makes no sense to my gringo mind, LOL. I know I'm missing something! To me it looks like another pointless waste of time and effort. Apples are always peeled for pies etc.

Separating the rind from the pith allows you to suck the juice out of the orange without having to taste the rind.

These oranges are sold to "people on the go." Taxi drivers stick their arm out of their taxi and exchange money for an orange, people walking to and from work grab an orange for a quick refreshment. It's quick, easy, and delicious. After being peeled, they are split in half, and a bit of a salt and pepper mixture is added in between both halves. The orange is cut 95% through so both halves remain attached.

Hm, seems a juice to-go would be more manageable, but then there are those bothersome cups and straws to contend with

The juices on the go are usually served in a plastic bad with a straw in it. Now I have a reason to go see the sugar cane juice lady. Thanks!
